What Would You Snag If You WON a FREE One-Minute Spree in the Freezer Section of Your Grocery Store?

One of my lucky readers gets to find out!

I do get emails occasionally from you guys (thanks! I love hearing about your own debt-free journeys!) and one lucky reader recently shared some exciting news with me:

“I read your blog every day [yes, that's exciting news! but that's not what this is about] and couldn’t wait to share my very very very good day with someone.  Since you shop at the Commissary like I do, you may have noticed the contests they occasionally have, you know the ones with the white cardboard box with the little slit in it and the paper to fill out your name, phone number, etc.  Do you ever enter those?  And did you happen to notice the one at Wright Patt a month or two ago to win the chest freezer and a one minute shopping spree in the frozen food section?  Well, you see where I’m going with this…I WON, I WON, I WON, I WON!!!!   Yippee!!!  I know you probably couldn’t care less [of course I do!], but I just couldn’t help sharing.  So anytime you are in the Commissary and you see a drawing entry set up, always fill it out!  This one was run by Proctor and Gamble and he told me they will be having another one for some other prize soon.  I hope you have a very blessed Easter Break and thank you for your blog.  I love it!”
Chris

And just for the record, Chris? Yes, I did fill that one out. Thanks for stealing my prize.

Oh, I jest!

So, readers. Chris would now like to know — what would you make a beeline toward if you had one minute to fill your cart up for free in the freezer section? I’d have to scope out the area first to know for sure, but I have a pretty good idea. You’ll have to read about it in the comments! (Which is where you’re going now to give your ideas as well, yes?)

Congratulations, Chris! So nice to know that someone who’s reading personal finance blogs won such a rewarding prize!

I would get greek or stonyfield plain yogurt! It’s hard to find at some stores, and it is in high-demand in our house!

Well, for anyone still following the comments on this topic, I just got back home from my shopping spree. I thought I was going to pass out for a minute I was so nervous! My grand total for one minute was….drum roll please….$464.81. I’ve never spent that much on groceries in my life! My usual MONTHLY grocery bill is about $200 or less. I went straight for the seafood first, lots of shrimp, salmon, etc., then on to the boneless chicken, next headed to the turkey breasts, and finished up with some of the high dollar type burgers. Since today is my birthday and wedding anniversary, the WONDERFUL man from P & G told me after the minute was up to go ahead and put a couple of frozen cakes and some pizzas in the cart too! All in all, I am a very happy birthday girl today! Thank you everyone for all the helpful suggestions, and thank you again Jolyn for posting the topic on your blog! :)

Yea! So exciting! Sounds like you did really well and got a lot of stuff to last you a while — and that’s in addition to a new freezer!

And Happy Birthday, too! :)

I agree with another post…anything gluten free. Usually gluten free = $$$

I would be totally going for the Boca, Morningstar, frozen juice, burritos, anything that would add to my diet or give me a quick meal if you would. This would be a great prize given I am currently out of work!!! Keep up the great though-stimulating posts.

Totally going for meat. Any kind really, but turkey would be tops on my list… I would probably try to avoid frozen prepared meals, as they aren’t as healthy (and do come on sale here fairly regularly), but the fruit, oh yeah! also frozen pastry shells and fish.
Congrats on the win, Chris – I fill out those things a lot but haven’t gotten lucky yet.

I always liked seeing stuff like this on tv. I loved supermarket sweep. I always dreamed of what Id sweep into my buggy. I would stake out the night how I wanted to hit it. Mainly frozen meats.

I’d probably go for the frozen meat section- hamburgers, fish etc and then if I had time the frozen fruit since it’s usually SUPER expensive!

I would fill my cart with SteamFresh veggies. My kids love, love, love them and the mixed vegetables can be used in so many recipes.

The first thing that comes to mind is shrimp, cheesecake, and all the Boca and Morningstar Farms products. They are yummy, but expensive!

Hi, Chris here. I am really appreciating Jolyn posting this question (THANKS JOLYN!) This is exactly what I was hoping for, some brainstorming to help me plan my “attack”. :) I hadn’t even thought of the organic meat until Jolyn as well as a couple others suggested it. The roasts and other beef are out, because those are all in the refridgerated butcher section in the back of the Commissary. :( The Shopping Spree is strictly limited to the frozen foods, but I’m certainly not complaining! I’ll leave a comment sometime Tuesday afternoon letting everyone know how it went. Thank you all so much for all of the well wishes and congrats! I’ve never won anything like this before, so I’m still a little dumbfounded at this point. :) I just hope my nerves don’t get the best of me!

Where’s the beef?
Seriously, I would buy Roasts and LOTS and LOTS of them :)
Frozen fish also (the good stuff, shrimp and lobster)

Can you make friendly with the butcher and have him wrap some stuff up ahead of time for you that you can grab over the counter when the clock starts ticking?

Congratulations! That is an awesome prize!!

Totally going for the meat..maybe some frozen pizzas…I’d be tempted to get ice cream but a freezer full would not be a healthy choice for me. Maybe some of those pricey frozen family meals. Have fun, glad to see someone in Ohio is getting a freezer ful of food!

Lets see…I think I would grab some icecream, banquet frozen chicken patties then shrimp, maybe some turkey roasts, and lots of smartone meals yummy! and if i had any extra time I think i would grab some frozen pizzas.

I’m with the consensus-whenever the local Albertson’s has frozen meat on sale 2-for-1 I always stock up and I’ve found that having frozen shrimp in the freezer saves me on many a busy night when I have nothing planned for dinner. A quick thaw in cold water while boiling pasta, then 2 minute sear in a really hot frying pan with salt and pepper, and toss with fresh tomatoes or herbs or whatever. Dinner in 15 mins.

It would be very tempting not to stock up on Haagen Dazs though…

I’d go for the frozen meat too: chicken breasts, hamburger patties, steak, seafood, seafood, seafood! I’d also grab corn dogs, frozen burritos, hot pockets, and chicken nuggets as they are kid favorites here but rarely bought! How awesome! I’d love to win that prize.

I totally agree about the organic section. I’d also go for some king crab, lobster, and steak. And at the end I’d probably just get desperate and grab whatever my hands touched and figure out what it is later. ;)

I think I’d hit up the Kashi section first and then move onto the seafood. I love the Kashi microwave meals, but never buy a lot of them due to the price.

I would head for the seafood and organic meat section! I’d want someone there counting down the seconds for me so I knew when to stop at one and head to the other!
