Update on Our Debt

by jolyn on March 31, 2010

in Planning,Savings,Snowball Status

We paid off our consumer debt last month! Woo-hoo!
Oh, wait. Did I mention that already?

But we still have a boat-load of mortgage debt. Here’s the skinny.

Second Mortgage: $31,552.49
Primary Mortgage: $170,820.61
Rental Mortgage: $109,150.33

Total Mortgage Debt: $311,523.43

We are taking a brief hiatus on the debt snowball to build up some savings (beyond the $1000 emergency [...]

Easter Eggs

by jolyn on March 30, 2010

in Holidays,Kids' Expenses

We actually dyed our Easter Eggs early this year…
“Early? Vhat is zhis, earrrly word you use? I do not know ze meaning of zhis!”
Yea, yea. So we’re not exactly the early type. And that’s a really bad accent. I know, I know…
I was motivated by our impending road trip for the kids’ Spring Break, which [...]

In short — I’ve been loving it!
So much so, in fact, that I tweaked the recipe a bit to make it stretch even farther and I’m loving it still.
For one batch of powder detergent I’m still using the one bar of Fels Naptha, but I doubled the other two ingredients.

My Cash Envelope System: An Update

by jolyn on March 26, 2010

in On Budgeting

In short: I think I’ve made this unnecessarily complicated for my taste.
I started with four cash envelopes:

Food/Groceries
Clothing
Gifts
Booze (Just keeping it real.)

I’ve since added two more:

Entertainment
House

First off — I’m doing much better about remembering to take my cash when I go to the store. Yea, for me!
However. Aside from the grocery envelope? By the end [...]

In honor of my birthday I decided to pause a moment and take a look in the mirror and assess the situation. This may sound funny, but I don’t regularly take the time to “take care of” myself, and as usual I have been letting some things go. No doubt some of you fellow moms [...]

Rental Property
Remember how we recently rented out our rental property in Vegas? Right after the new tenants moved in, our property manager notified us that the water heater wasn’t working. Yea. So I’m thinking, “So much for our first rent check.”
Good news! We have enough money left over in our property management account from [...]

Shortly after our youngest son turned three he was diagnosed with Apraxia of Speech. We had just moved from overseas to Ohio about six months prior, and I had been working hard to get Peter referrals from our medical care on base so I could take him to specialist after specialist to have his hearing [...]

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent: An Update

by jolyn on March 22, 2010

in recipes

I tweaked the recipe a bit for the homemade dishwasher detergent I’ve been making. It seemed like my glassware and coffee mugs weren’t coming out as clean as they had been, so I doubled the amount of Lemi Shine for each batch of the powder detergent.
Homemade Dishwasher (Powder) Detergent:

1 cup Borax
1 cup Baking Soda
2 Tablespoons [...]
