Skype Can Be a Deployment’s Best Friend

by jolyn on January 8, 2010

If you’re lucky enough to have your spouse serving where internet is easily accessible and reliable, which The Hubs should be this time around.

The last time he deployed, his personal internet use was limited and he bunked with a bunch of guys in a big pine box with zero privacy. This go around, not only should he have wireless internet but also his own private living space! That’s a big deal.

The time difference will be a challenge, but we do hope to skype regularly. If you haven’t heard of or ever tried skype, you really should check it out. It’s free! All you need to do is create a user name and you have access to free video calling to anyone else who’s on skype. (You also need a microphone and camera.)

We practiced with the kids, to show them what we’ll be able to do while daddy’s gone. The time difference will be a challenge, but still. I remember life pre-email,  pre- cell phones… Pre-internet, for Pete’s sake! Can you imagine what it was like to have a loved one going to war  Back In The Day? Pick a day, any day. We simply have so many more ways to communicate that anyone a generation ago could have ever imagined. In the case of a deployment, anyway, that’s a very good thing.

This is the way forward and more people should be seeking ways to communicate. In a time where the world is open skype is needed. It is easy to use and so beneficial.

Happy u r using it. Oprah does.

Before Skype was as popular as it is now, I used to use the Apple IChat video chat system (we all had Macs) to talk to my parents in England when they were sick and my siblings in other parts of the world. I couldn’t get overseas to be with them as often as I wanted, but we coud talk every day, and they could see their grandchildren and the pets and artwork, roses from the garden, etc. Really eased the separation.
