…when many people start thinking about those tax benefits of giving to a charity before the end of the year.
I was listening (actually, watching) Clark Howard (do any of you all follow him at all?) recently, and he mentioned a website you can go to to check out a particular charity that you may be thinking of donating to.
Give.org allows you to search for a report on a particular charity and see how they hold up against the standards of the Better Business Bureau. You can review financial statements, tax status, and fund raising methods, among other things.
When we started our debt snowball some six months ago, we stopped almost all of our giving to focus on eradicating our debt. I’m not going to quote scripture or otherwise try to justify this: I think this is a personal decision that every one needs to make for himself.
One charity we do continue to contribute to is Compassion International, so out of curiosity I checked them out. Not surprisingly, they meet BBB’s “20 Standards for Charity Accountability”.
Would anyone like to share a recommendation for a charity they like to donate to? Especially around this time of year?

Lauren,
I have heard of Heifer International but never looked into it. I’ll have to keep that one in mind for the future.
