Post-Thanksgiving Reflection

in Holidays,On Eating

I trust you all enjoyed a thoroughly wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends. Or just family. Or just friends. Whatever floats your boat. The real question is… What did you eat? Turkey? or ham?

Or are you crazy like us and had both?

My momma tried to tell me that we didn’t have to have turkey just because they were coming. But I knew better. Muwahaha. And The Hubs likes his pig. So…

You know how easy it is to stick a turkey breast in a crockpot? And douse it with BBQ sauce? (Yes, we had BBQ turkey for Thanksgiving. Color the pilgrims jealous.) It barely fit in there, but… Oh. My. It was almost as good as the ham. But the ham. Oh. My. Word. It was like breathing swine. But in a good way. It virtually melted in your mouth.

I did the ham the same way I did last year. “If it ain’t broke….” and all that. And because, really, ham isn’t just for Thanksgiving anymore, it’s worth it to share the recipe here. It’s for the crockpot, of course. Nothing easier.

Crockpot Honey Glazed Ham

4 lb. ham: boneless, fully cooked
1 can ginger ale
1/4 c. honey
1/2 teaspoon mustard
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions: Place ham and soda into crock pot. Cover and cook on low 6 to 8 hours (or high 3-4). Thirty minutes (or more. or less.) before serving, combine remaining ingredients, including 3 tablespoons drippings from bottom of slow cooker. Spread over ham and continue heating. Let ham stand for 15 minutes before serving.

Do I really need to tell you how many ways this ham can be used?

  • Ham sandwiches
  • Tossed with Pasta
  • Ground up for ham and egg salad
  • Ham and eggs
  • The list goes on…

We went ahead and broke out the Christmas dishes for the feast. The Christmas dishes my mom has been giving us since the beginning of time. The same dishes that I have not had space to store anywhere remotely accessible until we lived in this house.

“Why are we using Christmas dishes for Thanksgiving?” asks my husband/son/everyone.

“Because we can,” I reply.

And the centerpiece? The most frugal decoration ever. And very green, too, I might add.
Oh, I crack myself up.

  • Thanksgiving meat: $21.52
  • Thanksgiving centerpiece: $0.00

No, we didn’t eat just meat. But I don’t feel like itemizing the rest. Suffice to say, we ate quite well. I sincerely hope you all did, too. I am very thankful to be a citizen of this great country, that I am.

Yes, I am jealous! I know I paid more per pound because it was just a turkey breast, but even the whole turkeys weren't that cheap at the commissary, by far.

You will be jealous to know that I paid $5 for a 12.83 lb. turkey! I know…crazy! It was something like $0.38 a pound!
