…and it ain’t pretty. Our van needed a new starter. The total cost of the repair?

$1041.55! Ooch.

Cost breakdown:

  • Labor: $249.50
  • Parts: $546.72
  • Towing: $157.00
  • Repair Order: $17.47
  • Sales Tax: $70.86

It was sooo good to get our van back and get back on the road. I think our greatest fear was that the problem would end up being something other than a bad starter — after waiting four days for that part to arrive. Here The Hubs is hamming it up just before we left Kansas. But don’t let him fool you — he was as mad as a hatter. Mad enough to spit nails. Fit to be tied, I tell you.

The cost of the starter up there? $546.72? That one came from a dealer, one of only four starters left in this country for this van. Um, huh?

After the car had been towed, the starter ordered, and we were just waiting, The Hubs found one online for less than $200. But it was a re-manufactured starter (whatever that means) so you would need to order it and put it on yourself or have Joe-Bob down the alleyway do it for you. Only this van doesn’t let just anyone work on it and we don’t know any Joe-Bob.

So that leaves us where we started this post, with a $1041.55 car repair bill. That’s going to put a bit of a damper on our debt reduction for the month, I tell you what.

But it could be so, so much worse. It always can be, right? Like this accident we passed in Missouri, just outside of Kansas City. It held up traffic on both sides of the interstate; we sat there for a good 45 minutes ourselves. We knew whatever was up ahead couldn’t be good when we saw the Life Helicopter flying in.These people looked a bit shell-shocked, but at least they’re still standing. The guy driving this truck wasn’t so lucky.
I’m hoping that our insurance will reimburse us for our $157 tow job… but I think the towing for his truck will be the least of that driver’s worries.

I'm trying to look pass your hubs to see the van properly! :) Of course he is fine too.

And in truth it could be so much worse.

Life happens huh. So glad you are safe.

That accident you shared looks pretty darn bad.

I usually pray when I see a police speed by or ambulance or FD because you just know they are going somewhere.

That's right! Keep it all in perspective! Speaking of perspective, our book club just read Safely Home by Randy Alcorn. Read it and you will realize what true "richness" is.
